Mary McEnery Carey, age 88, of Erie passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at UPMC Hamot. She was born February 9, 1929 in Erie the daughter of the late Raymond and Nora Murray McEnery.
A lifelong resident of Erie, Mary was a graduate of Mercyhurst Prep High School. She along with her late husband, Emmett, owned and operated Erie Builders Concrete. Mary was a member of the Erie Maennerchor and Kahkwa clubs along with the former Aviation club and the East Erie Turners.
She loved the game of tennis so much she had a court installed in her backyard. She also enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends.
Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband Emmett J. Carey who died in 2007; a daughter Marla Carey, and a brother, Harley McEnery.
She is survived by her daughter, Sheila Layden and her husband Richard and a son, Richard Carey and his wife Dr.Maureen Barber-Carey, all of Erie. She is the sister of Ray McEnery of TX and the grandmother of Andrea Layden, Shelby Scott, and Ryan Carey.
There will be no visitation and funeral services will be private. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements by the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty St.
