Mary Alice Knobloch Smith

April 3, 1923 — January 15, 2018

Mary Alice Knobloch Smith, age 94, of Erie, died on Monday, January 15, 2018 at Forestview Skilled Nursing.

She was born on April 3, 1923 in Erie, the daughter of the late Emil and Alice Smith Knobloch.

She graduated from Strong Vincent High School in 1940, attended Hood College and graduated from Ohio State University.

She was a former member of the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Paul, the Kahkwa Club, the Visiting Nurses Association and the Junior League. She was a board member and past president of the Erie Homes for Children and Adults and lectured at the Planetarium in the Watson Curtze Mansion.

She served on the board and was a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels Program.  Mary Alice was an avid golfer and served as president of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Woman’s Golf Association, was a member of the United States Senior Women’s Golf Association and was the Woman’s City Senior golf champion for two years.  She was an avid bridge player and needlepointed exquisite Christmas Stockings for all her great grandchildren.

Mary Alice was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Maurice O. (Moe) Smith, an infant daughter, Margaret Anne in 1949, a brother, Ellis Tracy Knobloch, a sister, Augusta Black and a niece and her husband, Connie and William Collins of Erie.

She is survived by three daughters, Tracy Wingerter and her husband John R., of Erie; Amy Gibbons and her husband, Gary, of Phoenix, AZ; Anne Hasson and her husband Michael of Tigard, OR; and two sons,  Peter O. Smith and his wife Susan of Erie and Edward E. (Ned) Smith, of Erie; and 14 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street, (at Powell Avenue,) on Friday, January 19, 2018 from 3 to 6 p.m. and are invited to attend a service there on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 11 a.m. with Reverend J.R. Wagner and Reverend Keith Sundberg co-officiating.

Private Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
