Marilyn R. Garfield

October 5, 1930 — April 3, 2025

Erie

Marilyn R. Garfield, age 94, of Erie, died peacefully on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at Brevillier Village.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George “Bud” Garfield, in 2010. Together they raised a family and enjoyed a wonderful life in Erie, PA.

Marilyn was born in Erie, PA on October 5, 1930, the daughter of the late Mary and Carl Uht. She was a 1948 graduate of Strong Vincent High School and a 1952 graduate of Villa Maria College. For many years she taught school in Ohio and Pennsylvania, and later served as a librarian’s assistant at Villa Maria College and Gannon University.

Marilyn volunteered for more than 30 years at the Emmaus Soup Kitchen, St. Patrick’s Haven, and the Erie Philharmonic, which gave her a sense of purpose and joy. She was active in the St. Andrew’s School PTA while her children attended school there.

Marilyn and Bud were very involved in the lives of their children and grandchildren, cheering for them at baseball, track, cross country, and swimming events. In one of Marilyn’s last conversations, she talked about her loving marriage and how proud she was of her family.

She and her husband Bud enjoyed cross country skiing, bicycling, and European travel. Her scrapbooks of their adventures provided many hours of enjoyment in later life.

Marilyn is survived by one daughter, Lisa Gensheimer of Henderson, NV; two sons, James Garfield and his wife Regina of Reston, VA, and Paul Garfield of Pass-a-Grille, FL; three grandchildren, Emily Johnson of Placerville, CA, Evan Garfield of Arlington, VA, and Maura Pick (Chris) of Oakton, VA; and eight great-grandchildren, Julian, Lily, Ella, Nico, Meadow, and Silas Johnson, and Charlie and Caroline Pick. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Barbara Makarowski, of Rochester, NY, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband Bud, Marilyn was preceded in death by two brothers, James Uht, killed in WWII, and Gerard Uht, devout Catholic and local philanthropist; and her grandson Jonathan Miller, and her son-in-law Richard Gensheimer.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 12,2025 at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 1116 W.7th St. from 9:00 am until 10:00 am at which time a Funeral Mass will be celebrated.
