Marie “Dolly” Wassel
Marie “Dolly” Wassel, age 91, passed away peacefully at her daughter Janice’s home in Las Vegas on Thursday, June 25, 2015, while recovering from a stroke suffered January 16, 2015 while vacationing there. Dolly was born in Brockway, PA on May 17, 1924, the daughter of the late Angeline and Marian DeFranco. She married her husband of 64 years, Sarge Wassel on May 13, 1951.
Besides her parents, Dolly was preceded in death by her son, Sarge Duane Wassel in July 2012 and her brother, Tony DeFranco in January 2015.
She is survived by her husband Sarge, three children; Janice Sands of Las Vegas, NV; Darene and Darryl Wassel; three grandchildren, Jason and Brandon Richardson and Dylan D. Wassel; a sister, Louise Dombrowski, all of Erie, and a brother Eugene DeFranco of NYC, as well as many other relatives from the De Franco, Mastrian, Wassel, Mizak, Lee and Biletnikoff , Evans and Sokoloff families.
Before marrying and starting a family, Marie managed the Ringclear Hosiery store, once she had children, she put her considerable efforts and talent into motherhood. She enjoyed spending time with her immediate and extended families. She participated in all her children and grandchildren’s lives, traveling and celebrating life to the fullest while they were growing up and continuing until the present. She was known for her sassy wit, honest opinions and heartfelt advice. Her smile and positive attitude were infectious. Dolly had the heart of a warrior, battling her way back from a broken neck in 2011. Our loss is Heaven’s gain.
Friends are invited to call at the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty St. on Thursday from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM. A Funeral Service will be held at 5:00 PM in the funeral home. Private burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
