Manuel R. “Poncho” Mejia age 70, of Erie, passed away quietly at home on Tuesday, January 3, 2017. He was born in San Jose, CA on April 21, 1946 a son of the late Ruffus and Grace Vasquez Mejia. After graduation from San Jose High School Manuel served in Vietnam with the US Army. He married Mary E. Spencer Mejia and worked for many years as a machinist for Erie Specialties and Products in Erie. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and going to the casino as well as playing cards and dancing (especially doing the “twist”). He also loved to travel and walk his dog Oreo. He was an avid Oakland Raiders fan.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers; Andy, Johnny, Freddy and Peter Mejia along with a sister, Magdalena Mejia. In addition to his wife he is survived by four children: Teresa Collazo (Jose) and Frank Mejia (Jennifer) both of Erie along with Manuel Mejia Jr and Raymond Mejia both of San Jose, CA. Six grandchildren also survive as well as five siblings; Trudy, Tommy, Sandy (Ann), Tony (Melinda) and Grace Mejia. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends will also miss him.
Friends may call at the Burton Wintergreen Funeral Home, 2532 Norcross Rd., Erie, PA 16510 on Friday from 2:00 pm till 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm till 9:00 pm and are invited to services there on Saturday at 11 am with Father David Renne officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family C/O Burton Funeral Home.
