Madelyn Johnson

Madelyn Johnson passed away on October 21, 2017 at the age of 93 in Lee’s Summit, Missouri from complications associated with Alzheimer’s. She was born in Buckingham, Colorado on June 11, 1924. Madelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Richard “Dick” Johnson, daughter Martha Johnson of Seattle and son Paul of Leland, N.C. She is survived by her son Daniel of Seattle, Carolyn (Hybarger) of Fort Worth, Steve of Kansas City, nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. As a young girl Madelyn and her family moved to Erie, Pa. where her family owned and operated a Red and White grocery store in Kearsarge. She graduated from Millcreek High School in 1942. After the war she helped put her husband through college (Houghton, N.Y.) and Presbyterian Seminary (Richmond, VA.). Upon graduation they served churches in North Carolina and Missouri. She helped support the family and sent four kids to college by working as a human resources representative at the Belk-Berry store in Wilmington, N.C. and the Jones Store at the Independence Blue Ridge Mall. Madelyn loved the Lord and her family. She was a member of Lee’s Summit Presbyterian Church. Known for her drive, determination and thoughtfulness, she had a caring, positive and cheerful nature. She touched all that knew her and we will miss her dearly. A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held in Lee’s Summit at the John Knox Village Chapel at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 29, 2017 and a private graveside service will take place on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Erie, PA.
