M. Irene Stevens Smith, age 93, of Millcreek, currently at Westlake Woods, passed away on Thursday, November 19, 2015, at UPMC Hamot. She was born in Crawford County on July 7, 1922, a daughter of the late Frances and Lillian Betilian Stevens.
She graduated from Strong Vincent High School. Irene was primarily a homemaker and mother and also worked at Marx Toys and Crawford Plastics Co. She was a member of Lakewood United Methodist Church. She was an avid gardener, loved to travel and also enjoyed listening to country music. Irene had all she could wish for and her claim to fame was the she never smoked or drank. She was an avid story teller and was very loving. Her grandchildren were a special joy to her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death her husband Ellsworth M. Smith; two grandchildren:Charlie and Logan Smith; and four siblings: Francis Stevens, Gladys Stevens Johnston, Harold Stevens, and Sonny Stevens.
She is survived by four children, Carol Swisher of Henderson, NV, Douglas Smith and his wife Linda of Girard, Shirley Anderson and her husband Paul of Garden Dale, AL and Dennis Smith and his wife Dolores of Erie; 20 grandchildren, William Swisher, Laurie Hanley, Thomas Smith, Keri Smith Badaracco, Joshua Anderson, Jodi Sanchez, Rachel Dormann, Nathan Handley, Jessica Overstreet, Bethany Smart, Zachary Anderson, Rhett Smith, Adam Smith, Benjamin Smith, Zackery Smith, Shane Smith, Jacob Smith, Tess Smith, Elizabeth Smith and Sophia Smith and 26 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by four siblings: Mildred Stevens Ogren, Marie Stevens Bricker, Norma Stevens Bille, and Earl Stevens and many nieces and nephews of which she and her husband were guardians of Robert and Barbara Johnston.
Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street, (at Powell Avenue) on Friday Nov. 27th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and are invited to attend a service at Lakewood United Methodist Church, 3856 West 10th Street, Erie, PA 16505 on Saturday at 1 p.m. with Reverend Bob Lewis officiating.
Private Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Lakewood United Methodist Church.
