Lydia Asplund

November 30, 1930 — April 19, 2017

Lydia Davey Asplund, age 86, formerly of West 10th Street in Millcreek, passed away Thursday April 19, 2017 at Manor Care in Mayfield Heights, Ohio.

She was born in Erie on November 30, 1930, daughter of the late Lydia Haskins and William Davey.

She graduated from East High School and Magna Cum Laude from Mercyhurst College (now University) where she won the highest student achievement award, the Carpe Diem Award. She committed herself to social work within a four county area around Erie for the Commonwealth of PA Public Assistance Office.

She was a founding member of the Council on Volunteers for Erie County (COVE). She was an active member of Lakewood United Methodist Church and the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She served on many boards including the Hamot Board of Incorporators, Meals on Wheels, and the Vision & Blindness Center. In addition to her social and community work, Lydia enjoyed planning the family’s annual 4th of July celebration which began with breakfast on the beach for 60 and ended with fireworks at sundown! The special time with family and friends at their Warren cabin Valhalla will always be cherished.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Henry R. Asplund in 2012, a sister Evelyn Michaels, and brothers Donald, William, and Herbert Davey.

She is survived by a son, Craig Asplund and his wife Peggy of Hebron, OH; a daughter, Carol Asplund Kenny of Euclid, OH; and six grandchildren, Christopher Asplund, Danielle Weber, Kendra Tak, and Garik Asplund, and Sarah Kinds and Martin Kenny; and eight great grandchildren.

Friends may call at Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street (at Powell Ave.), on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and are invited to attend a service in the Chapel there on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
