Lucia Doyle

March 20, 1947 — November 3, 2021

Lucia Marguerite Pearson Doyle, age 74, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2021 due to complications from pneumonia. The eldest daughter of the late Atty. Conrad A. and Helen E. DeMott Pearson, Lucia was born in NYC and lived most of her life in Erie, PA.

She was a 1965 graduate of McDowell High School. She earned a bachelor's degree at Heidelberg University in 1969 and a master’s degree at Edinboro University in 1974. She and her highschool sweetheart, Timothy James, married in 1971. Her friends and family admired her staunch support and advocacy for her husband’s disability, received in Vietnam in 1969. She taught elementary school music in the Millcreek Township School District and sang in the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Paul choir and the Erie Philharmonic Chorus. Lucia’s love of classical music was passed on to her daughters, especially Katie who she enjoyed watching play in orchestra concerts.

A family oriented person, Lucia loved to delve into both the DeMott and Pearson family genealogy. A Swede at heart, Lucia was a member of VASA and enjoyed time spent in Jamestown, NY with cousins Linda and Mary where she learned a bit of Swedish and had some rather poor attempts at straw goat making. She and her cousins organized several Pearson Family reunions that brought together relatives from as far away as Sweden and the west coast. Through her marriage to her favorite Irishman Tim, Lucia broadened her horizons to include celebrating St. Patrick’s Day and other offerings of the Irish Cultural Society. She and Tim were actively involved with the creation of the Erie County Vietnam Veterans Memorial and were proud of their involvement with Erie Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #435.

The recipient of a lung transplant, she was grateful for the additional six years of living it provided her, especially being able to witness the marriage of her daughter Brita to Jenn Flynn and to celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary with Tim in June. She and the family were greatly appreciative of the care provided by Dr. Charles Lane, Kristy and others from the Cleveland Clinic lung transplant team.

Lucia was happiest spending her time at the beach on Presque Isle, both as a child and later with her own children. Over the years, she enjoyed kayaking at the lagoons, biking, cross-country skiing and walking with the neighborhood walking group. Her longtime high school and college friends were also dear to her and she cherished organizing and attending reunions over the years.

Lucia is survived by her loving husband Timothy James Doyle, and her daughters Katherine E. Doyle of Lakewood, Ohio and Brita E. Doyle and her wife Jenn Flynn of Washington, DC. She is also survived by her brother James Pearson and his wife Molly, her sisters Anne Nowlin and her husband Rey, Charlotte Mashyna and her husband Michael, and Edith Juracek and her husband Edwin as well as her nieces and nephews Lily, Phil (wife Lauren), Caroline, Ellen (husband Jonathan) and Chris and grand nephews Liam and Greyson as well as brothers in law Dennis (wife Deborah) and Bill (wife Floria) and their children and grandchildren. She was predeceased by her in-laws Betty and Jack Doyle and a nephew Nicholas Pearson.
