Lt. Cmdr. Carolyn Jean Shearer Usn Ret

Lt. Cmdr. Carolyn Jean Shearer USN Ret., age 95, of Erie and formerly of Florida, passed away on Monday, August 15, 2016 at Saint Vincent Hospital.

She was born in Mahaffey, PA on September 25, 1920, a daughter of the late Arba C. and Blanche Wensel Shearer. She graduated from Mahaffey High School.

Jean served in the U.S. Navy retiring as a Lieutenant Commander in 1969 after 20 years of service. She was a member of the Central Florida Navy Nurse Corps. Association, The Retired Officers Association (TROA) and the Disabled American Vets (DAV). She was a charter member of the Navy Nurse Corps. Association and Women in Military Service Association and was also a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Florida.

Jean enjoyed golf and often told of surviving being hit by lightning in 1972, while on the golf course in Florida.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her sister Anna Mollo, a brother Donald Shearer and a good friend Ann Norman.

She is survived by her nephew and caretaker, Russ Mollo and his wife Mary Jane of Fairview; a brother Robert Shearer and his wife Nancy of Hermitage; nieces Pam Collica and Cathie Brannon; nephews Larry Shearer and Bobby Shearer and several great nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street, (at Powell Ave.) on Saturday from 10 am until the time of the service there at 12 noon with Rev. James R. Wagner officiating.

Burial will be private at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
