Lorraine Porte, age 97, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2023, at St. Mary’s at Asbury Ridge. She was born November 4, 1926, in Des Moines, Iowa, a daughter of Earl Braley and Reba Ogden Braley. She graduated from Downers Grove High School in Downers Grove, IL and attended Manchester College in North Manchester, Indiana.
It was at Manchester College where she met her soul mate, Homer Porte. They were married in 1947 and moved to Erie, PA in 1959 when Homer transferred to the Erie GE plant. Lorraine also worked at GE later, from 1970 to 1985 in the payroll department. She was an artist, wrote poetry, and also made many consignment crafts. She loved her home, being a homemaker, reading, oil painting, and her cats. And she loved Werther’s candy! She was a member of Glenwood United Methodist Church for many years and sang in the choir, was a member of the UMW, and was Sunday school secretary for several years. She enjoyed golf and was a member of the Downing Golf Course Women’s League. She volunteered at the Erie Cancer Society for 24 years.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Homer, her son, Doug, and her daughter-in-law, Robin. She was also preceded in death by her two brothers, Ron Braley, and Leonard Braley and his wife Bonnie.
She is survived by her son, Dan of Bellville, Ohio; her son, Jeff and his wife Lois of Platea, PA; her daughter-in-law Nancy Porte of Sequim, WA; her grandchildren Alena Porte of Castroville, CA; Jesse Porte of San Diego, CA; Kara Wallis, her husband, Don, and their 7 children, of Bellville, Ohio; and Michael Porte of Bellville, OH. She is also survived by her sister Sharon Whitman of Green Bay, WI, and her sister-in-law Tricia Braley of Sequim, WA, plus many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held at Glenwood Methodist Church, 2931 Myrtle Street, in Erie, on Wednesday, January 24th from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 noon. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Burton Quinn Scott Cremation and Funeral Services Inc. West Ridge, 3801 West 26th Street, Erie.
