First Female Uniformed City of Erie Police Officer
Lillian Rosemond Strand, 91, formerly of Hazel Street and Dufford Terrace, died Sunday, June 21, 2015, at Elmwood Gardens. She was born September 2, 1923, in Erie, daughter of the late Andrew Gustav and Anna Katherine Broberg Strand. A 1942 graduate of Academy High School, she was a veteran of WW II serving as a Seaman 1st Class with the U.S. Navy. When she joined the City of Erie Police Force in 1960, she became their first female uniformed police officer and proudly served the community for 28 years retiring in 1988. Lillian was a member of the former Bethany Lutheran Church and Fraternal Order of Police Haas Memorial Lodge No. 7, and was a former member of Sacred Heart Ushers Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, George, Reno, Benny and Arthur Strand; four sisters, Anona Edwards, Ellen Cahill, Norma Clement and Ruth Smith; and a niece, Denise Clement.
Survivors include many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Friends may call at the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle Street, Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. with the Erie Retired Police Officers Association holding a brief memorial service at 5 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Erik Young of St. John's Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery with full military honors conducted by Erie Crawford County Burial Detail.
