Kate Mcmaster

June 15, 1924 — April 21, 2022

Kate M. McMaster, 97, of Fairview, Pennsylvania, died on April 21, 2022.

Kate was born on June 15, 1924 in New Castle, PA where she graduated top of her class. Always known to be good with numbers, Kate worked in the accounting department of Louis Marx & Company Toys. She was also a founding partner in Mainly Country Furnishings for 12 years. Later in life, she helped with the accounting for her sons’ businesses, Competitive Gear and Lakeside Bagel.

Kate was an accomplished athlete, having completed several Presque Isle marathons along with numerous 10ks. She also enjoyed cross country skiing in the winters.

An exceptional artist, Kate was known for her watercolor landscapes and intricate quilts. She was a long-standing member of the Tuesday Quilting Group in Fairview PA. Additionally, she was active in the Fairview Historical Society and the Fairview Garden Club.

A true competitive spirit, Kate would challenge her friends and family to arm wrestling matches and would have competitions to see who could walk faster or sit up straighter. She was also known to cheat while watching Jeopardy.

Kate was preceded in death by her parents, James and Kate McMillin, a beloved brother, Edward McMillin, a grandson, Brennan McMaster,  and the love of her life, Don Ladner, with whom she reunited with at age 80.

She is already dearly missed by her four children, Jane Thornton (David) of Erie, Chris McMaster (Sally) of Park City, UT, James McMaster (Significant other Peggy Sica) of Asheville, NC, and Peter McMaster of Erie.

She is also survived by her 5 grandchildren - Melissa McMaster, Matt McMaster (Alisha), Nick McGinty (Bethany), Mary Witter (Fletcher) and Anne McMaster - as well as 3 great-grandchildren - Cate and Quinn McGinty and Grayson McMaster. Kate adored all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her nieces and nephews.

Kate was definitely a woman ahead of her time.  A true legend, she managed her own household right up to the end. She truly ran with the best of them.

No formal services will be held, but we hope you enjoy a 5pm glass of wine in her honor.
