Julia “Judy” Buyce, age 87, of Erie, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at Saint Mary’s at Asbury Ridge, surrounded by her loved ones.
She was born in Glens Falls, NY, on May 24, 1937, a daughter of the late Jack and Jean Wallace VanVranken.
Judy graduated high school from St. Mary’s Academy in Glens Falls and received her Registered Nursing degree from Albany Medical Center in 1958.
Growing up, she loved spending time with family and friends at Lake George in NY. She was a photography enthusiast, contributing many photos to her high school yearbook. Additionally, she ran the Camera Shop at Storytown USA for two summers.
Judy was a dedicated nurse for many years, working in hospitals, travel nursing, pediatrics, and finally geriatrics, where she retired from Fairview Manor Nursing Home.
She was a devoted and loving wife to her husband of over 55 years. Their love story actually began when Ray was a patient at the hospital where Judy was working.
Judy treasured her time with camp friends and family at the family’s Adirondack cabin in Lake Pleasant, NY.
Throughout her life, she enjoyed playing cards with friends, caring for their Golden Retrievers, shopping, and unwinding with the occasional glass of wine, especially when shared with her sister.
Above all, Judy loved being a Nana. She cherished every moment spent making memories, sharing laughs, and hugs with her beloved grandchildren. Whether it was family vacations, game nights, or just enjoying each other's company, she was happiest when surrounded by loved ones.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Buyce; her brother, Jack VanVranken; brothers-in-law, James McGrath, Gerald (Patricia) Buyce, and Jack (Sylvia) Buyce; and three nephews, Brian, Jimmy, and Gerry Buyce.
She is survived by her two daughters, Carey (Bill) Pelletier and Cindy Montagna; grandchildren Noah and Allie Pelletier, and Christopher, Jared, and Sophia Montagna; her sister, Joan McGrath; and a sister-in-law, Joan VanVranken. She is further survived by several nieces and nephews.
