Juanita E. Mitchell Shields, 89, formerly of E. 42nd St., Erie, PA went to be with the Lord on Sun., Aug. 10, 2014 at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, Charlotte, NC. She was born Feb. 26, 1925 in Farrell, PA, daughter of the late Merdick Mitchell, Sr. and Carrie Ann Holt Mitchell. She worked for Erie Resistor for 37 yrs. and Erie Insurance group for 10 yrs. before retiring in 1993. She was baptized and had given her life to the lord at an early age. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church where she served in different capacities. A graduate of Strong Vincent High School, Mrs. Shields received a Merit Certificate as an adult crossing guard for Joanna Connell School. She also was a foster parent. She was an avid bowler with the Poisettes and Gents (P's and G's) Bowling League with whom she loved traveling. She was a member of Ozeil Temple #317 of the I.B.P.O.E.
Mrs. Shields was a woman of loyalty, integrity, and character who loved her family by embracing a lifestyle of joy and laughter. She instilled a firm standard of high quality living. She will be greatly missed!
She was preceded in death by a son, Kevin Shields; daughter, Gloria Brewton; twin brothers, Herbert and Jerome Mitchell; sister, Merle Page; two grandsons, Sharieff Barnett and Davion Shields; and ex-husband, Sam Shields.
Survivors include a son, Ronald Shields of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Angela Shields of Charlotte, NC; brother, Merdick Mitchell, Jr. and wife Linda of Erie, PA; sister, Inez Mitchell of Erie, PA; six grandchildren, Carla Brewton of Erie, PA, Juanita Shields of Charlotte,NC, Lateasha and Angel Shields of Greensboro, NC, Ashley Shields of Gastonia, NC, and Christopher Bell of Cleveland, OH; daughter-in-law, Gale Shields of Steubenville, OH; eleven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Family and friends may call at the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle St., Erie, Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of service there at 1 p.m. The Rev. Christopher Bell, grandson of Mrs. Shields, will officiate. Burial will be at Erie Cemetery.
