Joyce Ann Jenkins, daughter of the late Mary and William Austin, was born November 6, 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland and departed this life on May 22, 2018.
Joyce accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Abbysinnia Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. She loved the Lord and was an awesome gospel singer. As little girls, Joyce and her sisters sang with their mother at different churches. As she got older, Joyce had a strong desire to attend the Peabody Institute and God granted her the opportunity. She enjoyed singing His Eye Is On The Sparrow with her great nephew Carroll Carter, Jr.
At a young age, she accomplished many things. She raised a son as a single parent and received her certification as a surgical technician at St. Joseph Hospital. She was employed at Medstar Harbor Hospital for thirty years, until retirement.
Becoming a good student of the bible was important to Joyce. She completed several correspondence courses and acquired certificates in Community Training, Pastoral Counseling, and Evangelism. Joyce was an evangelist at heart. She was known for “taking Jesus to the streets” and telling everyone she met about who Jesus is. She had compassion for people who were considered outcast. After being ordained, she led a women’s ministry for young women in Christ, teaching them to walk in Christ with authority.
One of her favorite pastimes was eating peanut M&M’s, which she called “holy pills.” She also loved vanilla pudding, Snickers bars, Popeye’s chicken and her niece Tina’s potato salad.
As her health began to fade, she longed to be reunited with her son, David, in Erie, PA. God saw fit to give Joyce the desire of her heart. God allowed love, restoration, and peace to flourish in their relationship. Her quick witted remarks, Holy Ghost encounters, scripture shout-outs, and eccentric lifestyle will surely be missed. She is deeply loved.
Joyce leaves to mourn, one son, David Austin and a daughter-in-law, Sherret Austin; two sisters, Bernice Brown and Loretta Johnson; two step-children, Jasmin and Anzhel Dorsett; three goddaughters, Shauntese, Sue, and Rebecca; two grandchildren, Moranda and Brandon; five great grandchildren, Stephen, Jenema, BJ, Brandy and Makha; three nieces, Tina, Sharon, and Rhonda; four nephews, Henry, Ronald, Terrance, and Darin and a host of other family members and friends who will miss her dearly.
Friends may call at the House of Prayer Missionary Baptist Church, 155 East 21st St., Erie, on Tuesday, May 29th at 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m., with Reverend Michael Cole officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to Burton Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 602 W. 10th Street, Erie.
