Joyce Carponter

Joyce Jiuliante Carponter (a/k/a “Mama Joyce”) left this world for her next adventure on Sunday, January 19, 2025. Joyce was born in Erie, PA on January 25, 1928 to the late Jessamine Jiuliante, Sr. and Rose Alfonso Jiuliante. She graduated from Strong Vincent High School, and was a lifelong proud Buckeye, graduating from Ohio State University at the age of 20.

Joyce lived in Ohio, Missouri, and Texas, but returned to Erie in 1960, where she raised her three children, “Candy, Sandy and Jeep,” on her own, working as an administrative assistant at Hammermill Paper Company. She went to night school to earn her teaching degree so she could spend summers with her kids, and for 30 years, was a middle school math and history teacher at Montclair Elementary and Westlake Middle Schools. 

She spent her retirement serving on the Boards of the YMCA of Greater Erie and the Erie Summer Festival of the Arts, and volunteering at the Erie County Public Library. Joyce received the 2019 Golden Apple Award for her excellence in teaching, nominated by one of her first students. She was an avid traveler, visiting 18 countries and twice as many states, and hiked the Grand Canyon at the age of 90.

Joyce lives on through her daughters, Candace Carponter (Brooklyn, NY) and Cassandra Carponter (Raleigh, NC), and her beautiful granddaughters, Alia Carponter-Walker (Brooklyn, NY) and Shea Carponter-Broderick (Atlanta, GA), who always made her laugh. 

She is partying in the next realm with her son, John (“Jeep”) Carponter, who is telling bad elephant jokes, eating pasta made by her sister, Joan Jiuliante Rainsford, engaging in endless political arguments with her brother Judge Jess Jiuliante Jr., and dancing with the love of her life, Donald Albertson.

Friends are invited to call at the Burton Quinn Scott Cremation and Funeral Services, Downtown, 602 W.10th St. on Friday, January 24, 2025 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Further visiting on Saturday at St. Andrew Catholic Church 1116 W.7th St. from 9:00 am until 10:00 am at which time a Funeral Mass will be celebrated. Entombment will be in Calvary Mausoleum.
