Joseph A. Winkler, age 62 of Erie, passed away Monday afternoon, October 31, 2017 at Fairview Manor, in the company of family and friends, after a long courageous fight from complications of a bilateral lung transplant ten months ago.
Joe was born in Erie, PA September 6, 1955, the son of Frederick T. Winkler and the late Rosemary L. (Crotty) Winkler.
Joe was an alumni of both St. George School and Cathedral Prep, graduating in 1973. He attended Slippery Rock University prior to enlisting in the United States Army as a Medical Laboratory Technician. Joe was a veteran of the Gulf War, serving proudly receiving several medals and many commendations, including three bronze stars during the years 1986 to 1993.
Joe was employed for over 20 years at Champion Ford Volvo Sales, Inc., working in both the sales and service departments, where he had many longtime friends.
Joe loved being outside and enjoyed gardening, but even more Joe loved fishing, shooting and outdoor photography. Additionally Joe was a lover of great literature and antiques. Prior to the decline in his health his favorite hobbies were trap shooting with his father Fred, where the two enjoyed their companionship and competition, and fly fishing Presque Isle Bay with his nephew Rick.
In addition to his mother Rosemary L., Joe was also preceded in death by his brother Frederick T. Jr.
Joe is survived by his father Frederick T. Winkler, a sister Barbara Sullivan, a brother Mark Winkler (Sandra), his nieces and nephews Erin (Dave), Cathlin (Michael), and Rick Sullivan, as well as, Nicole, Mark Jr., and Danielle Winkler. He also loved his dear friends Tricia, Shawna, and her daughter Ella. Joe additionally had a mutual respect, admiration and special friendship with Bill W.
The family wishes to thank the tremendous transplant team and the staff at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh, along with the wonderful care and support of Great Lakes Hospice and staff at Fairview Manor.
Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th St., Erie, PA 16506, on Monday November 6th from 12 p.m. until the time of service at 4 p.m. with Fr. John Detisch as celebrant. Burial will be private at Calvary Cemetery.
