Joseph Vieira

     Joseph L. Vieira, age 92, passed away on October 4, 2013 at the Erie VA Medical Center.
     Joe was born May 29, 1921 the son of the late Joseph and Martha Karle Vieira.  Joe was a graduate of Strong Vincent High School and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WW II.
     Joe was an engineer on the steamship Lakewood working for Erie Sand and Gravel.  He was also a boat refinisher for McAllister Marine for many years.  Joe was an avid Notre Dame Fan.
     Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Lynton Mootz Vieira; his stepmother, Mabel Vieira; two brothers, James and John Vieira; his nephew Steve Lynton; and his companion Charlotte Francis. 
     Joe is survived by his sister-in-law, Audrey Vincent Vieira; five nieces and nephews, James (Carey) Vieira, Joseph (Beth) Vieira, Teri Vieira, Joanne (Ric) Urban, and Cathy Songer; eleven grandnieces and grandnephews; four great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews; two cousins, Tom (Nadreen) Karle and Ted (Leonarda) Karle; good friends, Bert Reed and Karen Salavatore; and his stepson, Gary Mootz. 
     Joe's niece would like to thank with much love and gratitude the staff and nurses at Erie VA Medical Center.
     In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Erie VA Medical Center, 135 E. 38th St., Erie, PA 16504.
     Friends will be received in the Gathering Space of St. Andrew Catholic Church,  1116 W. 7th St., Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m.  Burial will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
