Joseph Raymond Snarski of Erie passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2016 after a brief illness. He was born on March 13, 1928. He graduated from the former Erie Tech on West 10th Street in 1946 and married Jane Lea Russell on July 4, 1948.
Joe grew up the youngest of eight children to parents Adam Snarski and Victoria Benedyk, who emigrated from eastern Europe at the turn of the century. He was preceded in death by his seven siblings, Edward, Chester, Julia, Lorraine, Helen, Alfreda and Jean. Those surviving Joe are his wife, Jane, daughters Christine Miller and husband Ron and Gail Rodencal and husband Tom, sons Jeffrey and wife Robin and Kevin and wife Kristin. His eyes lit up when seeing his grandchildren, Stephanie (Benson) Devich, Alyson (Benson) Kroft, Ryan, Adam, Gillian, Sarah, Jason, Sean, Katie, Cara, Alexa and Bailey. Joe is also survived by three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joe loved animals, always having a dog or cat nearby. In his 30's and 40's, Joe raised several horses and rode the local rodeo circuit as a calf roper, taking his family with him for weekend campouts. They all travelled as far as Oklahoma to find his dream roping horse.
Later in life, Joe became a competitive roller skater in dance, something he and his best girl, Jane, did before they were married and continued to do afterwards as well. They travelled to competitions across the country, most notably the Nationals in Nebraska. He and Jane were always together and married nearly 70 years. They enjoyed bike rides at the beach, ice cream at Sara's and long rides in the country. He loved watching football on Sunday afternoons during season. Joe was also an avid trap shooter and made many friends at the trap club.
After residing in Florida for several years, Joe and Jane returned to Erie to be closer to family. There will be no calling hours, but memorials may be made to the Erie Humane Society.
A private memorial will be held at a later date to honor both Joe and Jane who passed away June 6, 2016.
