Joseph Santone

July 5, 1924 — January 12, 2018

Joseph P. “Joe” Santone age 93, of Millcreek, passed away on Friday, January 12, 2018 at Fairview Manor.
He was born in Erie on July 5, 1924, a son of the late Pasquale and Genevieve Santone.
Joe attended Strong Vincent High School and served in the United States Navy for 6 years during WWII.
Joe worked at Sealtest Ice Cream, and became the Business Agent for Teamsters Local 397. He was President of the Teamsters for 26 years retiring at age 70 and was President of the Joint Council 40 of the Teamsters Union. He also served as secretary of the Pennsylvania Conference of the Teamsters Union. He was appointed by Governor Tom Ridge to the position of Commissioner of Workers Compensation retiring from that position at age 86.
He was a member of the Erie Maennerchor Club, Sportsmans Athletic Club, and the Siebenbuerger Club.
Joe’s strong belief in honesty and fairness was the characteristic that made him one of the most respected and admired men known to his family, friends and associates. He lived a full and complete life believing the key to true success is “Treating people the way you would want to be Treated” and also lived by the motto “There are always two sides to every story”. If he left us with only one message it would be to “Listen” more than you speak. He will be truly missed by all but his wisdom and advice will live on in all that knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Joseph (Joey) Santone; two brothers, John and Armand Santone; and a son in law, Tom Adler.
Joe is survived by the “Love of His Life” Min Johnson; five children, Guy (Vicki) Santone, Berry (Janice) Day, Pat (Inga) Santone, Dawn Adler, and Dr. David Johnson; 14 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and brother in law Rich (Rozanne) Trohoske.
Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home 3801 W. 26th Street (at Powell Ave) on Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. and are invited to attend a service there on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. John P. Malthaner officiating. Burial to follow in Calvary Mausoleum.
