The Reverend Joseph W. “Joe” Hughes age 87, of Sharon, Pa. and Erie, died Sunday, March 15, 2015 at Sharon Regional Hospital.
He was born in Aliceville, AL on April 29, 1927, a son of the late Tommie and Louise Lanier Hughes.
Joe was a devout Christian and worked for many years as a pastor including in Erie, Pa. at Second Baptist Church. He loved people and doing the work of ministry. He enjoyed engaging friends in conversation and helping people.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by two sisters; Lula Mae Scarbrough and Margaret Corder along with three brothers; Sam Hughes, Tommie Hughes Jr. and Esau Hughes.
Joe is survived by his wife, Annie Mae Corder Hughes along with one son Joe and his wife Marcia. He also leaves eight sisters: Rosie Singley, Salians, CA, Annie Pearl Walker, Mamie Ellis both of Tuscaloosa, AL, Murrie Beverly, Anchorage, AK, Bettye Walker (James), Erie, PA, Mattie Thompson (Billy) of Salanis, CA, Hattie Jones, Atlanta, GA; Voncille Foster and Cleveland, Tuscaloosa, AL, one brother, Bobbie Hughes, Erie, PA, three grandchildren: Marlo Newell (Jimmy), Atlanta, GA , Joe Hughes Jr. (Amber) and Carla Hughes all of Erie; eight great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren, and two Goddaughters: Pam Snow and Linda (Beverly) Ward.
Friends may call at Second Baptist Church, 757 East 26th St., Erie, Pa. 16504 on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service there at 11 a.m. with Reverend Dr. Allen B. Green officiating and Reverend Cleveland Ulmer doing the eulogy.
