John S. “Butch” Wegelin, age 69 of Erie, died at his residence on Friday November 17, 2017.
Butch was born in Phoenixville, PA, on March 11, 1948 a son of Pauline Kulp Wegelin and the late Sylvester Wegelin.
He graduated from Strong Vincent High School, Class of 1966, served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and the battle at Quan Loi. Butch was a decorated war hero receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge.
He was a chief inspector for Erie Bolt Co. for 50 years, retiring in 2016.
Butch loved music, especially the Rolling Stones, Beach Boys and Elvis. He enjoyed playing the saxophone and clarinet in his younger years. Butch also enjoyed sports, including the Pirates, Jets, and Celtics.
Survivors include his wife Christina M. Kleckner Wegelin four children Erik Wegelin and his wife Kathy, Joe Wegelin, Justin Wegelin, and Troy Wegelin all of Erie, three grandchildren: Lindsey, Taylor and Kyle. Survivors also include his siblings Bobby Wegelin and his wife Mary, Jerry Wegelin (Candy), and Charlene “Sissy” Wegelin Campbell and her husband Bruce, all of Erie. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. until the time of service 7 p.m. with full military honors, at the Burton Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 602 West 10th St.
