John C. Sechrist, age 60, passed away peacefully at his homeon February 7, 2018.Born in Erie, March 4, 1957 to Kenneth R. and Catherine (White) Sechrist. He attended Cathedral Prep’76.The University of Dayton earning a Degree in Business’90, and then graduated from the School of Advertising Art, Dayton Ohio.
Cookie as he was known at University of Dayton, worked his way through school with a skill he learned and honed behind the bar at the 3D’s, Erie Pa. This served him well on his extended road through school. He managed the Elephant Bar in Erie. He was asked by the owners to go to their Restaurant in Columbus to “catch a thief” … and he did.
Calling on that same skill set, while attending UD, John was on the board’s again as a manager at Newcomb’s, where he made many strong friendships, but his favorite job was working behind the Bar at Jays Restaurant, a staple of Dayton Fine Dining. Once he graduated from SAA he put his talent to work. He was employed as an in house graphics designer for a Dayton engineering firm before moving on to Elder-Beerman’s
John married and had three wonderful children with his former wife Jennifer. These three were his world. Whenever we talked no matter the reason the conversation turned to those kids. He loved them from the bottom of his heart and they were his world.
John was well read. He especially liked current events, although soft spoken he would light at the opportunity for a good debate especially one where he had command of the facts. He had a great love for baseball, he understood the game, and he particularly enjoyed the Cincinnati Reds and the Pirates. You could also find him watching the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Anyone, one who knew John, would always start by saying what great guy and what a gentle man he was. He was a man that never complained no matter what he was faced with. Never asked for pity and was always ready to do for you what he could.
He is survived by his twin sister Joan Sechrist of Grand Rapids, MI, his children, Will, Catherine and Quinn Sechrist of Dayton, OH; brother David Sechrist and wife Chris, Erie, and nephews Patrick, Erie, Bryan and Sean of Chicago,IL.
