John E. Ropelewski, 74, of Erie passed away peacefully at his residence on Saturday, June 25, 2022 after an extended illness. He was born in Erie on July 28, 1947 to the late Edward and Anne (Komorek) Ropelewski.
He graduated in 1965 from Technical Memorial High School, where he studied auto body repair. He joined the United States Air Force as a jet engine mechanic, stationed at Chanute AFB and George AFB. After his service, John was employed with the United States Postal Service for 35 years. Employed as a clerk, he performed a variety of duties throughout his career.
John was an antique car enthusiast known in the Erie area for his automotive expertise. A member of the Presque Isle AACA for many years, he loved working on his cars and displaying them in car shows. He also enjoyed music and played rhythm guitar in his band, aptly named "Johnny and the Ropetones." For years, John looked forward to playing the seasonal role of Santa Claus at South Hills Child Development Center, where he delighted students and teachers alike with his quick wit and never-ending supply of jokes. John was also a member of the Sunflower, Huzars, and Slovak National Clubs.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his best friend and cousin, Ron Komorek.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Diane Ropelewski, and their children: daughters Pamela and Julie Ropelewski of Millcreek and son Philip Ropelewski of Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Son John Ropelewski, daughter Jennifer (John) Patterson, and three grandchildren also survive.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children.
