John O. "Jack" Murphy, 79, formerly of Millfair Road, died Thursday, February 19, 2015, at Fairview Manor. He was born July 11, 1935, in Girard, PA, son of the late Oliver J. and Catherine Brunner Murphy. He attended Girard High School and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served with the U.S. Army. He was a fireman and water tender for International Paper retiring in 1999 after 40 years. Jack was an avid fisherman and gardener.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Sharon J. Branch Murphy in 2007; two sisters, Lois Gouldsmith and Sally Murphy; and a brother, James Murphy.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon McDevitt and husband James of Erie; two sons, John M. Murphy and wife Sandra of Seoul, South Korea and Christopher L. Murphy of Erie; and eight grandchildren, Michael, Conner, Samantha, Candace, Ian and Andra Murphy, and Madison and Graydon McDevitt.
Friends may call Monday from 3 until 7 p.m. at the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle Street. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Jude Church, 2801 West Sixth Street, Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. Private burial will be at Erie Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 1128 State Street, Suite 301, Erie, PA 16501; or to the Regional Cancer Center, 2500 West 12th Street, Erie, PA 16505.
