John Paul Makay, age 84, of Girard, passed away, Thursday, February 26, 2015 following a brief illness.
He was born in Erie, on December 5, 1930 a son of the late Paul and Susan Lietava Makay.
After graduation from West Springfield High School, he attended DeForest Technical Institute in Chicago. John enlisted in the U.S Army Signal Corps and served during the Korean Conflict. He, along with his brother, was founder and co-owner of Makay Brother’s TV in Girard for over forty years.
He was a member of the Federated Church, where he served as an usher for many years. John was one of the first members of the Nautilus and Fitness Center, where he was there every morning at 6 am. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, gardening, including working in his grape vineyard. His most joy was his family, He dedicated 100% of his time to their sporting events and activities - never missing any of it whether near or far.
John is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 50 years, Susanne Wonner Makay; a son, Daniel Makay of Lake City; two daughters: Nancy Makay and her fiancé Russ Polizzi of Millcreek and Shelly Bender and her husband Kelly of Fairview; a brother, Elmer Makay and his wife Fran of Lake City; five grandchildren: Amanda Maicki and her husband Don; Camdon Makay, Lucas, Karly and Mason Bender and one great grandson Bryson Maicki. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Burton Funeral Home, 525 Main St. East, in Girard, on Sunday from 1-6pm and are invited to attend a funeral service on Monday at The Federated Church, 11995 Main St., East Springfield at 11 a.m with Rev. Ed Huntley officiating. Burial will be at Girard Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the Federated Church; National M.S.
