John Komora Jr.

John H. “Jack “Komora Jr, 91, of Erie and Millcreek passed away peacefully on Wednesday March 8, 2023 at Westlake Woods.

Jack was born February 2, 1932, in Erie, the son of the late Jack Sr and Ann Hermen Komora.

He was a 1950 graduate of Millcreek High School where he played basketball, baseball, football, and spent summers as a lifeguard at Presque Isle.   Jack went on to earn a BS in Physical Education from Slippery Rock State College and an MS in Education from Edinboro.

Jack was a physical education teacher in the Erie School District at Tech Memorial for 25 years.  He also served as athletic director, coached basketball at Memorial, and was a PIAA referee.

After retirement from teaching, Jack owned and operated Whippy Dip ice cream for 32 years with his wife, Phyllis.

An avid and excellent golfer, Jack was a 5 time club champion:  1 at Lakeview CC, 3 at Lake Shore CC , and 1 at Innisbrook Golf Club(2000) in Palm Harbor Florida where he was a member for 39 years.  Additionally, Jack had 12 top 30 finishes in the EDGA and multiple Senior club championships. 

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his son, Jay and his sister, Betty Nejedlik.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Phyllis. Jack and Phyllis were each other’s best friend since they met 76 years ago at age 14.

Jack is further survived by his sons, Chris (Gail) and Gregg of Erie. Grandchildren Caitlin Engler (Tim) and Brittany Komora (AJ Cassello). Great Grandchildren Cole and Evie Engler.  

Jack is also survived by his sister-in-law, Pat Bridger, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Jack was an original, independent thinker. His calm, quiet demeanor, unique sense of humor, and competitive spirit on the golf course will be remembered and missed.

Friends may call at the Burton Quinn Scott Cremation and Funeral Services, West Ridge 3801 W. 26^th on Sunday, March 12, 2023, from 3:00 pm until the time of service at 5:00 pm.
