John Michael Joint
John “Jack” Joint was born on December 28, 1930 and died from complications of COPD on Monday, May 18, 2015. He grew up in “Kingtown” and attended St. Ann grade school where he was proud to be an altar boy for the Latin Masses. He was on the varsity baseball team for East High School and graduated from there in 1948. Jack was a life-long athlete who played fastball, softball, and slow pitch till he was well into his sixties. He was an accomplished bowler throughout his life and coached his son’s basketball team at St. Ann’s. He loved Notre Dame football and was a devoted New York Yankees fan his entire life.
Jack was an Erie police officer for more than 20 years. He could often be seen directing traffic on State St. where he had once been called the “Toscanni of 10th Street.” Jack was deeply proud of his Irish and Slavic roots and was passionately committed to the Democratic Party. He was a former chairman of the First Ward and remained active and interested in government and politics throughout his life.
Jack was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Anne Joint; his wife, Bernetta (Mattia) Joint; his former wife, Anne Gehringer, and his parents, John and Anna (Prizinsky) Joint.
He is survived by his “kid” sister, Sr. Anne Marie Joint, SSJ and his five children; Kathleen Joint and her husband James Zeitler of Boston, MA; Michael John Joint, John Joseph Joint, Mary Elizabeth Joint and Anne Joint, all of Erie. He also leaves two granddaughters, Jennifer and Sarah Joint and one great-granddaughter, Angelina Corder.
Friends are invited to call at the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty St. Thursday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM and are invited to attend Prayer Services there Friday at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Ann’s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mary, Queen of Peace Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the VNA Hospice, 2253 W. Grandview Blvd., Erie, PA 16506. The Retired Erie Police Officers Association will conduct services Thursday at 6:00 PM in the funeral home.”See you later, Chief”
