John Greenawalt

June 11, 1927 — May 22, 2018

John B. Greenawalt, age 90, of Millcreek, passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at Manchester Commons.

He was born in Sligo, PA on June 11, 1927, son of the late Meade and Myrtle Pollum Greenawalt.

John served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Munich area as a tank driver during the reconstruction immediately following WWII. He was self-employed as an independent steel hauler and a Teamsters member for many years.

John was a quiet person, an honest man and a good husband and father.  He loved to read and enjoyed traveling.  Following his retirement, he especially enjoyed traveling to and spending time in Ormond Beach Florida.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Frank, Ronald and David Greenawalt and a sister, Thelma Greenawalt.

John is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Janet Switzer Greenawalt, three children, Vickie Greenawalt-Baker, and her husband Tom of Jeannette, PA, Timothy Greenawalt of Erie and Mark Greenawalt of Ormand Beach, FL, five grandchildren, Alison Rizk and her husband George and their daughter Helena (John’s great-grandchild), Alex Baker and his wife Erin Wengrovius, and Michael, Peter and Matthew Greenawalt.

Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street, (at Powell Avenue,) on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Services and Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2115 West 38th Street, Erie, PA 16508.
