John S. Fetzner, Jr., age 78, of Fairview, passed away Friday, August 20, 2021 at St. Vincent Hospital. He was born in Erie, May 16, 1943 son of John S. Sr., and Marion Hooker Fetzner.
John was a 1961 graduate of Cathedral Prep High School and attended Gannon University, where he played basketball. He was a fan of all sports as he enjoyed golf, flag football, but especially enjoyed playing softball. He retired after 53 years of service from GTE, where he worked as an Outside Plant Engineer.
John played over two decades of fast pitch softball in the Erie City recreational league for the PNA Club and Carpetowne. He was a gritty shortstop and a clutch hitter playing on a dozen city champion teams including Carpetowne’s State Championship in 1973. Along the way, he was named tournament MVP on at least a half dozen occasions. Everyone loved #4.
John’s family meant the world to him. In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by a brother, David Fetzner and a sister, Mary Ann Kramer.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Barbara Farver Fetzner, his daughters, Trina Byham (Ted), of Lake City, Jill Fetzner, of Erie and Sherri Fetzner, of Rocky River, OH; Step Children, Jennifer Bluey, of Erie, Michael Bluey (Stacey), of North Canton, OH, Gretchen Bluey (Fiancé, Kelly McCammon), of Erie, Aaron Bluey (Erin), of Wadsworth, OH. Further surviving are seven grandchildren, Courtney Conn (Tyler), of Berea, OH, Cassidy Byham, of Lakewood, OH, Blake Byham and Carly Byham, of Lake City, Kaden Bluey, of Erie, Chloe Spencer and Finley Bluey, of Wadsworth, OH, and a great-grandson, Colson Conn. Also surviving are his siblings Jerry Fetzner (Carol) and Beverly Orzechowski (Dan), both of Erie and his uncle, George Hooker (Colleen), of Erie, as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Friends may call at Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Services Inc. West Ridge 3801 W. 26th St., Erie on Monday, August 23rd from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. and are invited to a prayer service there on Tuesday at 9:15, followed by mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Peter Cathedral, 230 West 10th St., Erie. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
