John E. Bryan, of Lake City, died Thursday, February 21, 2013, at home. Born in Girard, he was a son of the late Clarence T. and Mary Louise Purcell Bryan.
John was a graduate of Albion High School and Grove City College. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was an industrial engineer and had been employed at GE, Bucyrus Erie and Eriez Magnetics. John, along with his wife Jean, owned and operated The Heir Shoppe in Girard. He retired from Lowes. John was a member of the Irish Cultural Society, KOINONIA of Erie County (K-59), Girard American Legion Post 494 and a former member of the Jaycees and the Girard-Lake City Exchange Club. He served on the Lake City Zoning Board, Girard Recreation Board and was an active member of the Lake City Firemen's Auxiliary. John loved sports; he played football, basketball and baseball and when his sons became involved in sports, he was a coach and an umpire. He was a member of the Girard United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by an infant son at birth, Tracy Melvin Bryan; a sister, Kathryn Erskine; three brothers: James P. Bryan, William Bryan, Robert Bryan; and a nephew, Donald Erskine. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Martha Jean Vogan Bryan; two sons: David G. Bryan and his wife Bridget Mooney of Erie, Bruce A. Bryan and his wife Tammy of Lake City; and four grandchildren: Jared Doutt, Jemma Bryan, Tracy Bryan and Tanner Bryan.
Friends may call at the Burton Funeral Home, 525 Main Street East in Girard on Sunday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Girard United Methodist Church, 48 Main Street East, in Girard, with Rev. Brock Beveridge officiating. This will be a Pittsburgh Steelers calling and service; appropriate attire appreciated. Burial will follow at Hope Cemetery in Cranesville.
