Joan Mala August, age 89, passed away on Thursday, December 2, 2021, at St. Vincent Hospital.
Joan was born on June 11, 1932, in Chicago, IL, to Edward and Babette (Loewy) Motz. She earned her BA from George Williams College and her Masters from Marygrove College. She spent her career serving the state of Michigan in childcare licensing. While she always identified as Jewish, she was dedicated to the philosophy of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, most recently affiliated with the congregation, in Erie, where she was an active member and donor and where her ashes will be interred. She was an active volunteer in the community for many years. Joan always said she "got high on life" taking pleasure in the little things. She was frugal with a dime, but would spend thousands on her family and philanthropies. She was organized to a fault and famous for her many lists, including those she made in the planning of her death. She was kind, funny, creative and quirky. She was truly one of a kind and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her dearly.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Joshua Lobenthal, who passed in 2010.
Joan is survived by her son, Adam Lobenthal; daughter in-law, Jackie Lobenthal; daughter, Lisabeth Lobenthal (Patrick Thomi); 7 grandchildren, Sarah, Ruth, James, Jamie, Michaela, Joseph, and Aaron; and 8 great grandchildren, Orianna, Okira, Obidayah, Layla, Gracie, Cas, Owin, and Parker.
