Jessie Payne

Jessie M. Payne, age 81 of Erie, made her final transition on February 28, 2018. Jessie was born on July 14, 1936 in Baldwyn, MS to the late Jessie Pierce and Rosie Windham-Pierce. Jessie moved to Erie at a young age with her parents and younger brother, Robert. After attending Academy High, Jessie began training in cosmetology at OIC. She worked for many years as a nurse’s aide at Hamot Medical Center and then as a daycare instructor and chef at the Martin Luther King Center.

Jessie was a member of Mt. Ebal Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a faithful tither.

In addition to her parents Jessie is preceded in death by her only son, Vernon R. Payne and her infant grandson, Brooks Jerome Baker.

She is survived by her five daughters, Geraldine (Malachi) Brunson, Jacqueline E. Pierce and Gina (Curtis) Lofton, all of Erie, Pamela A. Payne, of Brooklyn, NY  and Kelley (Craig) Ulmer, of Erie; her brother, Robert L.(Fannie) Pierce, of Erie; grandchildren, Letitia Pierce, of Erie, Noelle Pierce, Jessica Baptiste and Jessica Payne, of Charlotte, NC, Curtis Lofton, Quintin (Megan) Lofton, Hannah Ulmer and Harrison Ulmer, of Erie; daughter-in-law, Kathryn Russell, of Jacksonville, FL; nephews, Alexander C. Pierce and Aaron L. Pierce, of Erie and Anthony (Michelle) Pierce, of Pittsburgh. Jessie is further survived by five great-grandchildren, Rayah, Carter, Camille, Michala and London and her aunt, Sarah Windham.

Family and friends are invited to attend Jessie’s Celebration of Life at Mt. Ebal Baptist Church, 1617 East 26^th St., on Saturday, March 3^, 2018 at 1 pm until the time of service at 3 pm. Eulogy will be given by Reverend Cleveland E. Ulmer. Arrangements are entrusted to Burton Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 602 W. 10^th St., Erie.
