Jerome Shapiro

Jerome (Jerry) Shapiro age 90, of Erie, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 18, 2021.

He was born in Erie on December 12, 1930 son of the late Harry and Elizabeth Shapiro.

Jerry graduated from Academy High School where he was a stand out on the tennis team and was District 10 Champion in 1948.

After being discharged from the United States Navy, Jerry worked at the PA Unemployment office until 1957. He then became the owner of Times Square Bowling Alley until it was destroyed by a fire in 1959. He then went on to work as a Traffic Manager for Penn Iron and Metal which later became Liberty Iron and Metal for 35 years until his retirement in 1998.

Jerry enjoyed playing tennis, golf, basketball softball, bowling and squash. He served as the District Softball Commissioner from 1957 to 1958 and was a basketball official for 35 years. He participated in many bowling tournaments with the top bowlers in the country.  Jerry was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed following the men’s and women’s sports teams at Gannon, Mercyhurst, and Edinboro and enjoyed attending Gannon basketball games for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Frayda Friedman.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years who he married in July of 1959, Judy Adler Shapiro; three children, Betsy Greenawalt (Duane) of Bennington, VT, David Shapiro (Michele) of Pennington, NJ and Michael Shapiro of Little Rock, AR and 7 grandchildren, Tyler, Deven, Blake, Paige, Monica, Nicole and Melissa.

Private funeral services will be held on Tuesday by the Burton Quinn Scott Cremation and Funeral Services, 3801 W. 26^th Street, Erie, PA 16506.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brith Sholom Congregation 3207 State Street, Erie, Pa 16508.
