Jeanne Kuby

January 30, 1927 — April 8, 2022

Jeanne Benedict Kuby passed away on Friday April 8, 2022, at the Grace Homes Residential Care, in Richmond, California.
Jeanne was born January 30, 1927, to Maryanna Rutkowski Smith and her husband Walter R. Smith (who had passed away from TB three weeks before her birth). She began her travels as an infant at the Erie Infant's Home and was adopted by Ralph W. Benedict and Beatrice Armstrong Benedict.  Jeanne had wide ranging educational opportunities including the Erie Day School, Franklin Elementary, Academy High and Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Jeanne married Robert Sprickman, in 1948, and had two children, Robert Henry Sprickman II and the late Gae Lee Sprickman Walters Phinney.

As a single parent, she worked as the Administrative Assistant to the Treasurer at Sterling Milk in the late 1950's.  Her dedication to the job found her struggling through the aftermath of the Thanksgiving blizzard of 1956. Equipped with tire chains and dodging National Guard halftracks, she managed the drive from Wesleyville to the dairy at 34th and Peach to get out the payroll.

Jeanne was on the Boards of the Erie Infant's Home and the First Unitarian Church.  She remarried in 1960 to Dennis G. Kuby of Cleveland, Ohio and they had a son, Paul Scott Kuby.  When Dennis became a Unitarian Minister the family moved to Cleveland for his first church.

In 1967, they moved to Berkeley, California, as Dennis became the V.P. of the Starr King Theological School.  Two years later, they moved to Sherman Oaks, CA, as Dennis became the pastor of the Studio City Unitarian Church.

The 1970's found the family back in Berkeley where Jeanne retired after ten years as Payoff Manager of the Mason-McDuffie Mortgage Banking Company.

Jeanne loved Big Band music and dancing.  She spent her retirement enjoying tennis, traveling and communing with nature. She adopted Willie Nelson's "On the Road Again" as her theme, having it etched into her final destination marker at the Erie Cemetery.

Jeanne is survived by her two sons, three grandchildren and their families.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Services Inc. Downtown, 602 W. 10th St., Erie, PA 16502.
