Jeanne Becker, age 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday May 28, 2013 with her daughter and her husband at her side. She had been residing at Sunrise Senior Living Center in Erie. Jeanne was born in Champlain, NY on September 21, 1928, a daughter of the late Gustave and Laura Filion. Jeanne and her husband, Martin had moved to Erie in the fall to be closer to and to be cared for by their daughter, Julia Bongiovanni, and her family.
Jeanne graduated from St. Mary's High School in Champlain, NY and the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY. She received her Master's Degree in teaching from Teacher's College at Columbia University in New York City. Jeanne taught English at Odgensburg Free Academy High School in Ogdensburg, NY for nearly 25 years. She also taught CCD for a number of years and French at Wadham's Hall Seminary in Ogdensburg. She was a devoted member of St. Mary's Cathedral in Ogdensburg, NY and a daily communicant.
Jeanne was loved by all who met her. She lived a simple life as a devout Catholic. She was loved by her students and her community and held in high regard by all. She enjoyed the last several months of her life in Erie with her family, especially her grandchildren Noah and Marni.
Along with her parents she was preceded in death by four siblings Andrew, John, Irene and Eva.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Martin; a daughter Julia Bongiovanni and her husband John, of Erie; two sons Theodore David Becker and his wife Laura, of Haverhill, MA and Peter Gustave Becker and his wife, Laura, of Austin, TX; six grandchildren Noah and Marni Bongiovanni of Erie, Katherine and Allison Becker of Haverhill, MA, and Isabel and Martin Becker, of Austin, TX. She is further survived by a brother, Joe Filion, and 3 sisters, Cecile McCarty, Rita O'Gara and Anna Trow.
Friends may call at St. Andrew Parish, 1116 W. Seventh Street, Erie, PA 16502, on Friday May 31 from 2pm until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 3pm. Burial will be private at St. Mary's Cemetery, Champlain, NY. Local arrangements by Burton Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Villa Maria Elementary School, 2551 W 8th St Erie, PA 16505, where her grandchildren attend.
