Jean Myers Schuerman, age 91, of Erie, died on Tuesday March 4, 2014 at Forestview.
She was born in Robinson, KS on December 13, 1922, a daughter of the late J.D. and Clara Derrick Myers.
Jean attended a one-room school house in Kansas for eight years. She was a Class of 1940 graduate from Highland High School in Kansas. She attended the Highland Community College for two years and attained a degree in nursing from Kansas University School of Medicine in 1946, and received graduate credits from Gannon University. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau (an honorary nursing society.) Her nursing career included head nurse in the newborn nursery at the University of Kansas Medical Center, office nursing, staff positions in New York and Indiana hospitals, teaching student nursing at Edinboro University, Hamot and St. Vincent Health Center, and at Penn State Behrend.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant since 1958, where she served as Deacon, Elder, Trustee, teacher and mentor of young marrieds. Jean was a former member of A.A.U.W. and the Erie Infants Home Board, a member of P.E.O. Chapter X, and was a member of the Board of Directors of Sarah A. Reed Retirement Center for 19 years. She loved her family, travel, gardening, nature and her friends.
In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by a brother, Keith Alden Myers.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Perry Tylon Schuerman; four daughters, Dell Becker and husband Bill of Erie, Nancy Stevens and husband Jim of Richmond, TX, Janet Schuerman and husband Jim Ehrler of St. Paul, MN and Suzanne Schuerman of Washington, DC; and nine grandchildren, Stephanie and Jeffrey Becker, Omar and Alia Buhkowa, Willis Ehrler, Robin, and Brian Stevens, Claire and John Zippel, and one great grandchild Tabitha Proper.
Friends are invited to call on the family on Friday from 3-5pm and 7-9pm at the Burton Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 602 West 10th Street, and attend a service there on Saturday March 8th at 10am with the Reverend Timm High officiating.
