Jean A. Miller, 81, of Fairview, passed away on Monday, July 27, 2015 at UPMC Hamot after an extended illness. She was born on December 7, 1933 in Erie, PA, daughter of the late Thomas and Kathleen Cassin Umpleby. She was a secretary at Skinner Engine Company for a number of years and later worked in real estate. She was also active in several of the family-owned businesses over the years including the French Street Dairy Store and Reel Entertainment Video. She was an active member of the UPMC Hamot Aide Society and the Siebenbuerger Auxillary.
Jean had an endearing personality that made you feel as though she knew you your entire life. She enjoyed family gatherings, cookouts on the deck, drives around the Peninsula, birdwatching and sharing family stories. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Jack in October 2009, a son Thomas J. Miller, an infant grandson Thomas John Miller and a brother Thomas F. Umpleby, Jr.
Survivors include her son Grant and his wife May of Millcreek, two grandchildren Jamie and Grant (G.T.) Miller, a brother Jack Umpleby and several nieces and nephews. Her lifelong friend Winnie Winter also survives. She leaves behind her beloved cat Rascal. The family would like to thank Dr. David Hutzel, the staff at UPMC Hamot, Saint Mary's at Asbury Ridge and her caregivers from Home Instead who provided her care in recent years.
Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 W. 26th Street on Friday from 2-4 and 6-9, and are invited to attend a funeral service there on Saturday at 10am. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband and son on the family plot in Laurel Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the A.N.N.A. Shelter or Orphan Angels.
