Jean Giblin Deering, age 88, of Erie, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Monday, January 27th, 2014.
She was born Alivia Giblin in Akron, OH, on October 21st, 1925, the daughter of the late Thomas and Harriet (Hauntzelman) Giblin.
Jean was a devout Christian who led an active prayer life. She lived her life faithfully and selflessly. Jean retired from the Lord Corporation after many years of service. After retirement, she spent many years volunteering at St. Vincent Health Center, Manchester Presbyterian Lodge, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Gifts for Kids, the Chosen Mission Projects and the West Lake Fire Department Auxiliary. She made the first Koinonia in Erie County in 1983.
Jean was a devoted mother and grandmother, providing a warm, loving home for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed baking, but her greatest love was spending time with her family. She is survived by her children, Terry (Raymond) Deering and his wife Ellen, of Erie, and Randy (Craig) Deering, of Waterford; her brother, Walter Giblin of Erie. She is further survived by her grandchildren, Michael (Molly) Deering, Lindsay (Jonathan) Meighan, Miranda Deering, Collin Deering, Matthew (Meghan) McKelvey and Ryan (Heidi) McKelvey. Jean is also survived by her great grandchildren, Colton McKelvey and Kellen Deering, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home 3801 West 26th Street (at Powell Ave.) on Wednesday, January 29th from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. and are invited to attend a funeral service there on Thursday, January 30th at 1 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund, 1030 State Street, Erie, PA 16501 or the Westminster Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 3642 West 26th Street, Erie, PA 16506.
A private burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.
