“Eternal Optimism”
Janie M. Porter, 58, of Erie, PA was called home to be with Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Friday, February 17, 2017, at UPMC Hamot Medical Center.
Janie had an infectious smile that was bright and beautiful and a caring heart for those who were in need. She always…always had a generous spirit and would give what little she had to help someone in need, knowing that GOD loves a cheerful giver.
She was born February 25, 1958, in Erie, PA, the oldest daughter of the late Baxter Porter, IV and Margaret Lee Pulliam Porter. She confessed a love for Jesus Christ at an early age and united with Shiloh Baptist Church where she served faithfully in many ministries; such as, Junior Choir, Young Adult Choir, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Fireside Circle, Lydia Circle and was a member of the Baptist Training Union. She was an active member of the Family Home Prayer Meeting and Testimonial Services, which continues to meet every Monday for over 50 years. Its mission has been to introduce men, women, and children to Jesus Christ through prayers, songs, and testimonials.
Janie was a resident of Erie for over fifty years and was a committed, dedicated and loyal employee of the Barber National Institute with over 40 years of service. She has worked in several capacities such as; Cook, Mail-Room, Assembly, Quality and Control and has received numerous awards including Runner-up for the prestigious Nettie Mann Achievement Award.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by his two sisters Charlene Porter and Joanne Pullium and a brother Greg Porter.
Janie leaves, to cherish her in memory, a loving son Steffon D. McLaurin of Erie. Janie had a loving and caring spirit for her son that will last forever. Three sisters; Margaret Morgan and husband Tyrone of Erie, PA, Eva Simmons and husband Anthony of Erie, PA and Tina Bullock and husband William of Erie, PA. Five brothers, Baxter Porter, V and wife Dawn Givens of Denver, CO, Ron Porter and wife Lea Porter of Denver, CO, Marcus Porter of Denver, CO, Evans Porter of Erie, PA and Jeffrey Porter of Pittsburgh, PA. One precious granddaughter Neriyah McLaurin and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Friends may visit with the family on Monday, February 27, 2017 from 4pm to 8pm, at Shiloh Baptist Church, 901 East 5th St. A Home going celebration will be held there Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 11 a.m., officiated by Elder David W. Shirley. Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Janie M. Porter Memorial Fund.
