Janet Louise Griffin, age 91, died peacefully at her home on Jan. 9, 2024, surrounded and supported by her children. As a young widow, Janet raised her children with a strong sense of family unity and love for one another.
Janet was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 6, 1932, daughter of the late Walter and Ella Kramer.
She was a 1950 graduate of Millcreek High School and a 1954 graduate of Edinboro Teacher's College.
Janet began her long, successful career as an elementary school educator for the Millcreek Township School District. Most of her teaching career was spent at Tracy Elementary School. In 1990, Janet was honored as a "Teacher Who Made a Difference in the Lives of Students" by Who's Who Among America's Teachers. Upon retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at St. Mary's Home Gift Shop, the Brig Niagara Gift Shop, and as an usher for the Erie Philharmonic. All were perfect avocations for Janet as she could easily strike up a conversation with anyone!
Janet was a longtime active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, as well as, the Erie Woman's Club.
She enjoyed trying new adventures, a trait she passed on to her children. Janet loved to travel. Following college graduation, she embarked on a three-month tour of Europe with friends. She continued to pursue that tradition by taking many "girls' trips" with friends through the years. Later in life, Janet delighted in taking her children and grandchildren to Disneyworld where she actively participated in yearly 5K Disney Princess Runs. Janet loved dining with her weekly "Breakfast Club Girls." Gardening brought her great joy. Her yard was a floral-filled respite.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Griffin, Jr., as well as three sisters: Shirley, Phyllis, and Linda.
She is survived by her four children, James B. Griffin III. (Maurita), Genevieve Griffin (Mohsen), Rebecca Bureau and Charlie Griffin; four grandchildren, Justin Griffin, Hilary Nelson, Maeve Griffin and Christopher Bureau; one great-granddaughter, Ella Nelson and many nieces and nephews.
