James J. Szuminski age 65, of Erie, died quietly at home on Tuesday, May 28, 2013.
He was born in Erie on February 24, 1948 a son of Frank Szuminski and the late Anna Hriniak Szuminski.
He was a graduate of McDowell High School and served as a Specialist 4th Class with the US Army Airborne as a door gunner during the Vietnam War. He was a student of history and warfare and had a special interest in WW II military history. Jim was a talented artist, and he loved nature, often campaigning against the improper treatment of animals. During his life, he raised and cared for his pets; Spike, Zak, Darkie and most recently Shadow.
In addition to his father, Jim is survived by his brother, Gary Szuminski and his wife Barb of Palm City, FL., his uncles; Walter and Joe Szuminski and aunt June Milligan along with nieces, cousins, friends and acquaintances.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Jim's cousin Larry Dedinsky, who so kindly cared for Jim during his illness.
Friends may call at the St. James Cemetery Chapel in Crossingville Pa. on Saturday from 12:00 noon till the time of service there at 1:00 pm with Father John Swoger officiating.
Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery.
Jim cared so deeply for the protection of animals that his wish in lieu of flowers was that memorials be made to the ANNA Shelter, 1555 East 10th Street, Erie, Pa. 16511.
The Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street Erie, Pa. 16506 is in charge of arrangements.
