James M. Smith, age 70, of Erie died Wednesday January 16, 2013 at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center.
He was born on February 27, 1942 in Erie to the late James Monroe Smith Sr. and Katherine Alex Smith.
James served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era as a Quartermaster 1st Class on the USS Norris, USS Cromwell, and USS Springfield.
He was awarded the Fidelity Obedience Good Conduct Award and the National Defense Service Medal while serving in the Navy.
James graduated from East High School class of 1960 and attended Columbus College of Art and Design and Colorado State University.
He was employed as a veteran representative for the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, retiring in 2007.
James was a member of the American Legion Post 773, VFW Post 470, DAV Chapter #73 and St. John's Lutheran Church.
He enjoyed woodworking and crafts.
James is survived by his wife of 41 years, Darlene Smith, whom he married October 16, 1971; sons, Matthew Smith and wife Elizabeth of Pittsburgh and Sean Smith of Erie; daughter, Vicki Smith and Micheal Haskins of Erie; grandchildren, Claudia Lee, Isabella Lee and Lucas Haskins.
