James (Jim) L. Karle, age 97, of Erie, PA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, at his residence in Millcreek Township.
Jim was born in Erie, PA, on November 11, 1924, the son of the late Henry J. Karle and Louise I. Bauman Karle. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Louise M. Karle Marsden and Margaret Ann Karle Platz. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 69 years, Mary Ann Silverthorn Karle; daughter, Patricia J. Karle (Les); sons, James A. Karle (Lisa), and Thomas A. Karle (Len); grandson, Christopher W. Light and granddaughter Laura Isobel Karle Stack (Sam); great grandchildren, Sydney Light and Lincoln Light.
Jim enlisted during World War II as a radioman with the 7th Fleet Radio Unit for the U.S. Navy. After his honorable discharge in 1946, Jim was employed for 42 years at the American Meter Co. as an Inspector in their Quality Control department.
Jim was a loving and devoted husband and father who lived his life with integrity, humility, and compassion. He was a craftsman who took pride in every detail of his work. With no prior experience, he built his own house while working full-time. In addition to building and fixing everything broken, he also loved gardening. He was most content working in his rose garden. After raising his 3 beloved children, he doted his attention on Sookie, the cat.
Jim was a faithful and devoted Catholic and a member of St. George’s parish for nearly 70 years.
Special mention and many thanks to his caregivers (angels) who went above and beyond to care for him: Linda, Jeanne, Lisa, Morgan, Serene, Laura, Aimie, Tina and Betsy.
A reception of friends will be held from Noon until time of Memorial Mass at 1 PM on Saturday October 8, 2022 at St. George’s Church, 5145 Peach St., Erie, PA, 16509 with Father Nick Fratus celebrating. Private burial in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Interim Healthcare Hospice of Erie, or the Erie Humane Society.
