James L. “Jimmy” Carter age 86 of Millcreek passed away on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at St. Vincent Hospital.
He was born in Westchester, PA on March 31, 1932 a son of the late Harold and Emma Leonard Carter.
Jim graduated from Millcreek High School and went on to serve in the United States Navy and served during the Korean Conflict.
He worked as a Steamfitter for Scobell Co. and was a member of the Steamfitters Local Union 47/449 for many years. He retired in 1992.
Jim spent many years in auto racing. He started in the 50’s with NASCAR and NHRA where he was a car owner and later moved on to USAC and CART. He also was on various pit crews for Indy cars through the 70’s and 80’s.
After his retirement, he spent much time traveling to his grandson’s hockey games. He was very active in Erie Youth Hockey, McDowell Hockey, and California Univ of PA Hockey.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Carter.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Janet Caughey Carter; two daughters, Susan Birkmire (Wayne Natcher) and Nancy Birkmire (Pat Chavez); five grandchildren, Jamison (Ashley), Lindsay (Steven), Kathleen (Ian), Jennifer and Brett; four great grandchildren, Dustin, Avery, Carter, and Colton; and his loving caretaker, Adrienne Anto.
Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home 3801 W. 26th Street (at Powell Ave) on Saturday from 1:00 p.m to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m until the time of service at 7:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the West Ridge Fire Department 3142 W. 26th Street, Erie, PA 16506, The Millcreek Paramedics 3608 W. 26th Street, Erie, PA 16506 or to a charity of one’s choice.
