Jack Legenzoff

August 28, 1924 — May 21, 2021

Jack (Jet) Legenzoff died peacefully on Friday, May 21, 2021.  He was born in Erie on August 28,1924, son of Anisim and Xenia Legenzoff.

Jack enlisted in the United States Navy and served four years aboard the Destroyer U.S.S. Herndon in both the Mediterranean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.  The Herndon was assigned as the lead ship of the armada for the Allies’ entry into Normandy on D-Day.

Jack enjoyed many activities throughout his life. He was a life-long, ardent parishioner of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Nativity. He was a founding member in the CYS Club, where he was an officer for several years.  He also loved bowling, especially the Brothers’ Tournament and watching city-rec slow-pitch softball.

Jack’s favorite activity was spending time with his family, including his three daughters and their spouses, his two grandchildren, and his four great-grandchildren.  He especially loved being a spectator at the sporting events of his grandson Evan and of his beloved granddaughter Taylor, whose birth coincided with his retirement.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his wife Marva (Simon), a sister, Mary Carian and seven brothers:  Ace, James, Michael, Gregory, Alex, Eric, and Ken Legenzoff.

Surviving family include his three daughters:  Denise (Tom Paden), Debra (Errol Hilinski), and Lynn (Tom Cieplechowicz); two grandchildren, Evan Legenzoff (Sherrie Holmes) and Taylor Hilinski (Lisa Oberacker); and four great-grandchildren:  Justin, Kameron, and Isabella Legenzoff, and his namesake, Jack Hilinski.

Respects can be paid at the Russian Orthodox Church of Nativity, 251 East Front Street, on Monday, May 24, 2021 from 8:30 to 9:15, with funeral services immediately following at 9:15. Burial in St. John the Divine Cemetery

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jack's honor to either the Church of the Nativity Endowment Fund (251 Front Street, Erie PA, 16507), to the PA Soldiers and Sailors Home Welfare Fund for residents’ activities (560 East 3rd St., Erie, PA 16507), or to the charity of one’s choice.

The family would like to express its deep gratitude to the entire staff at PA Soldiers and Sailors Home for the love and care they provided Jack during the past 4 years, especially through the Covid pandemic and his final days.
