J. Gilbert Carlson, 84, formerly of Summit Twp., died on Sunday, June 12, 2016, at Sarah Reed Retirement Center. He was born on March 14, 1932, in Waterford, PA, son of the late Gustaf Gilbert and Catherine G. Blass Carlson.
A 1950 Graduate of Academy High School, he was a U.S. Army veteran having served during the Korean War. Gil worked for GTE for 37 years retiring as a supervisor in 1987. Following his retirement he worked part time for Scott Funeral Home and for Erie Cemetery Association for several years. For over 60 years Gil belonged to St. John's Lutheran Church where he served on Church Council, the Property Committee, and Dufford Terrace Board of Directors; coached youth basketball; and was named "2005 Man of the Year". Gil was a former member of the Siebenbuerger Club, South Erie Turners, Cascade Club, St. Francis Ushers Club, Waterford American Legion and Lawrence Park Moose. He bowled in many leagues and enjoyed fishing, hunting and golf, and coached Little League Baseball in Summit Twp.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Beatrice Zwilling Carlson and a brother, Eric Carlson.
Survivors include a son, Donald E. Carlson and wife Wendy of Waterford; daughter, Susan Carlson of Erie; sister, Linda Widdowson and husband H. Dale of Cambridge Springs, PA; brother, Erland A. Carlson and wife Mary Lou of Panama, NY and North Fort Myers, FL; two granddaughters, Rebecca and Emma Carlson of Erie; two grandsons, Robert and Roy Thoms of Waterford; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Tuesday from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle Street. A service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, 2216 Peach Street, Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Erik Young officiating. Burial will be at Erie Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 2216 Peach Street, Erie, PA 16502.
