Israel Gold, age 65, of Pittsburgh and formerly of Erie, died on Tuesday June 2, 2015 at UPMC Shadyside. Born in Erie, PA on October 21, 1949, a son of Ruth and Joseph Gold.
Israel was known to brighten the lives of everyone he met. He had a special ability to communicate with the people who found joy in helping him achieve the most fulfilling life possible. Through his perseverance over the course of his life, Israel served as an inspiration for many who struggled with disability or illness.
Mr. Gold began attending classes at the Devereux Foundation in Devon, PA in 1962. After his schooling, Israel went to work for Devereux Industries. He then worked at the McDonalds in Wayne, PA where he was their first Devereux Foundation resident employed. He opened the door for many other disabled individuals to obtain employment at this location by successfully working in the front of the store and providing great customer service. While living in the Philadelphia area, Israel was the President of Speaking for Ourselves, a community organization for people with disabilities. Israel created a wonderful web of friendships in the Wayne area and through his participation in Congregation Or Shalom (Berwyn, PA). Upon moving to Pittsburgh, he became an active member of Congregation Beth Shalom.
Mr. Gold was an ardent Pirates fan, particularly when they played the Phillies, and attended many games. In Pittsburgh, he enjoyed participating in many activities, including art classes and volunteering at an animal shelter, and lived in a home supported by Mainstay Life Services.
Mr. Gold was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Joseph Gold, and is survived by his brother Marvin Gold and his wife Janice Penick and beloved nephew Max Gold. He is survived and remembered fondly by his many cousins, including David Saul of Pittsburgh, PA.
