Irene T. Schnell
October 23, 1929 — May 4, 2024
Irene T. (Matusik) Schnell, age 94, of Erie went home to the Lord on Saturday, May 4, 2024. Her son, Rod, and his family were by her side as well as her daughter, Marcie, in spirit. She was born in Erie on October 23, 1929 the daughter of the late Stanley and Bertha (Buczynski) Matusik.
A lifelong resident of Erie, Irene and her late husband Albert loved to travel the world to places such as Italy, Aruba, and many others. They enjoyed dancing, listening, and partying to the music of Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, and Dean Martin. They loved life and loved to share it with their family and friends. Irene enjoyed cooking for those closest to her. Amongst raising her children, she had so much love to share; she became an instrumental part of raising four more amazing young ladies. She also persuaded her husband on a whim to buy a kennel, Merrymorn Poodle Kennels in the 1950’s. While raising, training, and grooming poodles, she also introduced a new breed from England into the area. Irene led her family as a devout Catholic who attended St. Jude the Apostle Catholic church.
After her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert J. Schnell who passed in 2019; her daughter-in-law, Patricia Schnell; a sister, Theresa Dlugoleski; and three brothers, Leo, Stanley, and Anthony Matusik.
Irene is survived by a daughter, Marcene Schnell Sonneborn (Jim) and their sons, Alex (Stephanie), Matt (Chantell), and David ( Lisa) along with her son, Rod “RJ” Schnell and his daughters, Kristie Schnell (Josh), Diana Schnell (Corey Fish) Julie Risjan (Brian) and JoAnne Schnell. Also surviving are 12 great-grandchildren.
Friends are invited to a Funeral Mass at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, 2801 W.6th St. on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at 10:00 AM.
